Playing again in this Tournament set a lot of demands for the team, they had all worked hard to fundraise to get to the USA - could they improve on last season.

United had entered both the Weekend and Main USA Cup. They qualified as Group winners of the USA Cup through to the Quarter Final

       Quarter Finals

St Paul's Blackhawk’s 1 – Paisley United 0

The result in this match was an injustice for United who had played so well in the game, the goal came with just 2 minutes left on the clock and was a result of a corner coming in and the keeper Mark Lafferty coming out to punch clear but the attacker getting there just before him to score. There had been great individual performances in the match from United and in particular the midfield of Kevin Murphy, Scott Dunsmore and Michael McGarry had worked tirelessly as did the rest of the team in a hot atmosphere only to see the result snatched away from them.

United Coach Jim Smith said that the 4 games in the weekend Cup would help players adjust to the main tournament which was starting in 2 days time and now the rest day on Sunday would help with injuries. When asked if he was disappointed, Jim replied that he knew the strengths of the teams at Cup Flight level and looking back United had only conceded 2 goals, unfortunately one was in the Quarter Final. To be the best you must play the best and that was where United wanted to be.

       Semi Finals

Hopkins Dynamo’s 2 – Paisley United 0

United now fresh from their rest day knew they should have taken more from this match, despite early pressure United never really tested the keeper. In the 18th minute a miskick by United’s keeper saw the ball go only about 25 yards from a bye kick, the Hopkins striker latched onto the ball and was away from his marker with only the keeper to beat he slotted the ball in at the near post. The game had been pretty level up until that point however United now seemed to be chasing play as opposed to controlling it. In the second half Kevin Murphy was played though on goal and the keeper advance in a 1:1 with the attacker forcing the ball to be played high. In the second half Hopkins killed off the game with 10 minutes to go when they broke through into the box and switched the play for the striker to score.

United Coach Jim Smith said that the result was disappointing and the players knew they had the beating of that team. In the Cup Flight you need to take your chances and stop the opposition taking theirs. Other ‘big names’ that went out included last year’s semi finalists The Saints and also the Rampo Valley Team. So at this level nothing is predictable.

Colleen Bourdon, Director of International Relations at the USA Cup was delighted that Paisley United could send teams over to the USA Cup to represent both Paisley and Scotland. She commented on how much the Tournament Organisers appreciate the hard work and fundraising that makes it possible for the team to attend their 3rd USA Cup and stated that Paisley United were awesome ambassadors for Scotland.
