Playing again in this Tournament set a lot of demands for the team, they had all worked hard to fundraise to get to the USA - could they improve on last season

United started off the Tournament with a friendly against Valley Eagles and came out winners 4:2 with goals from Tommy Taggart, Mark Rankin, Steven Fitzpatrick and Gary Wilson

Once again the Club was 'seeded' in the Cup Flight part of the Competition which is normally for Regional or State select sides. They were placed in with the best of the Teams, including West Des Moines Alliance and Regional Representative side Chicago Attack.

In the first game United started well but by half time it was 1:1. United maintained their composure and a long throw from USA guest player Michael Mennalis saw Mark Rankin fire home from close range. In the  game Woodbury Royals capitalised on a defensive error and finished off the game with a second near time.  In the last game against Chicago Attack it was a case of good saves by the opposing keeper and missed opportunities for United. In all games United had the opportunity to take all 3 points

       Quarter Finals

In the Quarter Finals United were drawn against USA side,  St Croix who were known as a defensive team and they had 10 players behind the ball for the majority of the match, Every time United attacked they faced a sea of St Croix players. St Croix also tried their hand at the long ball, but never really troubled the United keeper. The United strikers knew they were in a match being heavily marked at all times With minutes to go United were awarded a free kick just inside the St Croix half. Alex Perry took the free kick and found David Rock unmarked at the back post and he headed home to win the match

    Semi Finals

This all British tie drew a large crowd, the Saints were Southampton’s academy side and had lost out at the semi final stage the previous year. United were under pressure for the first 5 minutes, but gradually took control of the match and dominated for spells. The Saints tried a long chip shot which Tommy Taggart cleared off the line. Steven Fitzpatrick had a golden opportunity to score and did everything right placing his shot, but the defender got back in time to clear this off the line also. In the second half the Saints played a long ball which caught out the defence and the striker broke through to fire home.

United were beaten on the day but the Saints Manager paid tribute to the young side saying that United had troubled the Saints and given them as good a run for their money as any of the academy sides they had played. The Saints went on to win the Cup 2:0 beating HUSA from Illinois

United Coach Jim Smith said that he was delighted with the attitude and performance of the United side. There were 55 Teams in this years competition and to finish in the top 4 playing regional and state champions was a credit to the players. Overall it had been a great trip for the players and the planning was already under way for next year
