Playing
in this Tournament set a lot of demands for the team,
they had all worked hard to fundraise to get to the USA
- would it all be worthwhile ? - you bet it was.
A
credit to the Club was that the Team were 'seeded' in
the Cup Flight part of the Competition. They were placed
in with the best of the Teams, including State Champions
MBSA Racing Blast and Regional Representative side
Chicago Wind.
In the
first game United started well but by half time it was
2:2. A classic second half performance by the young
Scots saw them route Valley Eagles. In the next game
against Chicago Wind it was a case of good saves by the
opposing keeper and missed opportunities for United. In
the last game MBSA capitalised on a defensive error and
finished off the game with a second near time. In all
games United had the opportunity to take all 3 points

Quarter Finals
In the
Quarter Finals United were drawn against USA side Ajax
FC. United pressed hard in the match and just could not
break through the Ajax defence.
Ajax
were also finding the United defence difficult to get
past, using the offside trap well and with keeper Mark
Lafferty in top form. It was to be a mistake at the
back that cost United the first goal. The defender and
keeper failed to clear the danger and Ajax nipped in to
score. united did pull a goal back with 10 minutes to go
when Darren Quinn played a ball through for Tommy Coyne
who rounded the keeper to score. Shortly after that
United Keeper mark Lafferty was injured and Tommy
Gilmour went in. With just 4 minutes left United had a
throw in at the Ajax box, they lost possession and Ajax
powered down the park beating the defence and firing low
past the keeper to win. Ajax went on to win the Final :2
against Dunedin Celtic.
So
United were out but a lot of praise was gained from the
organisers, they also felt we could have gone that bit
further, at least they were a match for the stronger USA
sides and were so close to going on still - there's
always another year
